The 1,000 Most Common Italian Words

This page lists 1,000 of the most common Italian words. Ranks 1–900 are the course, in the same order, from the most useful downward. Ranks 901–1000 complete the public list. The app practices the first 900, and optional word packs add specialized vocabulary on top of that course.

Each row shows the rank, the Italian word, the English translation, the part of speech, and an example. Nouns include the article and gender. Audio plays when a recording exists. The last 100 rows have no recording yet, and the audio column stays in place.

Questions about the most common Italian words

Why start with the most common Italian words?

A small set of frequent words covers most everyday speech and writing. This page lists 1,000 of the most common Italian words. The signed-in course practices the first 900, in this same order. Ranks 901–1000 are on this page so the full thousand can be read. Optional word packs in the app add specialized vocabulary on top of those first 900.

How should I use this list?

Read a block of 100, say the Italian word, and check the English, the example, and the audio when a recording exists. Nouns show the Italian article and gender beside the word. Ranks 901–1000 have no audio yet. Practice ranks 1–900 with spaced repetition in the app.
